Condition of American doctor with Ebola 'improving daily'

Nebraska Medical Center

The wife of an American doctor being treated at Nebraska Medical Center for Ebola says he’s steadily improving.

Debbie Sacra spoke Thursday at a news conference updating Dr. Rick Sacra’s condition. Sacra began treatment last Friday at Nebraska Medical Center’s biocontainment unit after contracting Ebola in Liberia.

Debbie Sacra says her husband would be “humbled and overwhelmed” by the support he’s received.

"We are thankful for the research drug and excellent supportive medical care that was available because he could be evacuated. Most of all, we hope that what is learned from Rick’s and his colleagues’ illnesses can open up viable possibilities for the treatment of Ebola in west Africa, where the suffering is now extending far beyond the victims of the virus itself."

Dr. Sacra has received two doses of plasma therapy from Dr. Kent Brantly, another American doctor who contracted Ebola and survived after being treated at Emory University Hospital. He’s also received nightly doses of an experimental drug, and is getting supportive care.

Dr. Angela Hewlett, associate director of NMC’s biocontainment unit, says Sacra’s condition is improving every day, but doctors are taking things day-by-day.
