Last Call CD Review: Spectrum Road /Palmetto Records

Update: Bassist and vocalist Jack Bruce, who was a member of the rock super group Cream, in addition to Tony Williams' Lifetime, passed away in October 2014.

The Tony Williams Lifetime band was arguably the first band to release a true jazz-rock recording. 1969's blistering hot "Emergency" was a tour de force of music at the cutting edge. Williams, the young, legendary drummer who had just left the Miles Davis Quintet was at the top of his game with an incredible band that included John McLaughlin on guitar and Larry Young on organ. Much to this jazz fans surprise, Jack Bruce, who worked with Tony and was a very close friend , has gathered with John Medeski on organ, Vernon Reid on guitar and Cindy Blackman on drums for an unforgettable tribute to the legendary drummer and his outfit. And it is fantastic! Breathtaking readings of Vuelta Abajo, Where, Vashkar , and other Lifetime tunes will immediately grab your attention. These artists do not rest on any laurels; the music is sincere, passionate and deeply felt by all.  An instant classic!
