Efforts to get state senator Ernie Chambers' name on November's Douglas County Commission ballot are falling short.  He's 346 petition signatures short of the two-thousand needed to get on the ballot. The most common reason for signatures being rejected is voters weren't registered in District 3 or in Douglas County. Incumbent Commissioner Chris Rodgers will run unopposed.

Nebraska legislators have given initial approval to a measure that would require law enforcement officers to undergo anti-bias training. The bill that received first-round approval Wednesday in a 43-0 vote could be the last major piece of legislation proposed by the state's longest-serving and best-known state senator, Ernie Chambers. The Omaha lawmaker designated it as his last official legislative priority in what could be his final year in office.

(Omaha, NE)  --  A former Douglas County election commissioner is planning to run for the Nebraska Senate.  Dennis Womack is planning to run for the north Omaha legislative seat currently held by State Senator Ernie Chambers, who cannot run for re-election due to term limits.  Womack served as Douglas County election commissioner from 2004 until 2006.

(Lincoln, NE)  --  A state senator raises eyebrows by making a controversial comment about the American flag.  Earlier this week, Ernie Chambers compared the American flag with a Nazi swastika.  He went on to call the stars and stripes a quote "rag."  He made the remark during debate over a bill that would update school civics requirements.  Other lawmakers criticized Chambers, saying it's insulting to those who have sacrificed for the United States and also minimized the horrors of the Holocaust.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska lawmaker known as an animal welfare advocate has failed in his quest to protect a prairie rodent that some ranchers view as pests, but is vowing to raise the issue again.
