Voters in Omaha will head to the polls Today for city primary elections that will whittle down the field of those in the mayoral race. Five candidates are vying for the post of mayor, while 29 candidates are seeking City Council seats. The top two candidates in each primary race advance to the May 11 general election. Among those seeking the top spot of mayor is incumbent Jean Stothert, a Republican seeking her third term in office who leads the field in fundraising, with more than $380,000 cash on hand.

Early In-Person Voting Deadline Soon For Omaha Primary

Omaha's early in-person voting deadline is approaching.  Registered voters have until Monday, April 5th at 5:00 p.m. to cast an in-person ballot in advance of Omaha's primary election.   The Douglas County Election Commission office is offering extended office hours on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. for early voting.   Omaha's primary election is next Tuesday, April 6th. 

The family of Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert says her husband has died. Police found a man dead at the couple’s home. A statement Friday from the Stothert family announced the death of Joe Stothert. The statement came about three hours after Omaha police were called to the mayor’s home to investigate reports of a shooting. Officers found the body of a man. Police didn’t provide details about the shooting but stated that foul play wasn’t suspected. The family says Joe Stothert's death was a "tragic loss." 

Eastman Receives Influential Endorsement

Nebraska congressional candidate Kara Eastman is getting a key endorsement.  Former President Barack Obama has endorsed Eastman for the November general election.  The Democrat Eastman takes on Republican Incumbent Second District Congressman Don Bacon in a rematch from two years ago.

 

The Nebraska Democratic Party is calling on its U.S. Senate nominee to drop out of the race after he made sexually repugnant comments about a campaign staffer in a group text with her and other staffers. The party says its state executive committee voted unanimously on Monday to withdraw all of its resources from Chris Janicek’s campaign. Janicek, the owner of an Omaha cupcake bakery, is challenging Republican Sen. Ben Sasse, who is seeking a second term.

Last week, Douglas County Election Commissioner Brian Kruse announced his office is implementing an early voting request list.
